diy floating shelves

one of the projects dane and i wanted to tackle first, but ended up being towards the end (#life), was diy floating shelves in various places in the house. all made from the same old barn wood. it was worth it – it’s awesome.

when we were working on the house, dane had asked our friends if he could store some wood – various barn wood and huge black walnut slabs on a trailer- on their spare concrete slab for a couple of weeks …. 3 years later we (ok he) made the shelves. *shout out to the stechs for the free storage!

so dane started with the old barn wood and used a large planer to square it up and make it straight. then he cut down to size and grooved out a little spot for the led lights with a router. You can see in the first picture how prepped for the wiring when he hung the drywall – then wired into a low voltage transformer that is connected to a light switch.

each shelf is supported by two hidden brackets that are anchored into a 2×6 behind the drywall. he drilled the same size hole in the back of the shelves and wedged them on for a trial run – to make sure they were level. added a little drill hole for the wiring to run to the led thru the back of the shelf and we were ready…

*after this he took a couple minutes to kill a (what seemed to me to be) a huge spider*

the color we used to stain the shelves was specifically and carefully chosen… jk it was something we found in the basement. #leftovers

after putting up and wiring the shelves up the fun part came — styling!

floating shelves styling

i didn’t want to spend any money on decorating these shelves, i had an idea of the color palette i wanted to use (basic neutrals *see the whole house*) and i knew i had things around the house or in cupboards that would.. or could work. so i walked around and pick things out – set in a pile on the counter and got to work.

i went with black/white, touch of copper, yellow and greens and for the shelves and honestly i’m pretty happy with it…for now at least πŸ™‚

what do you think? do you like to ‘shop you home’ for decor inspiration and ideas.. move things from one space to another? will you try some diy floating shelves? leave a comment below and let me know what you think or any questions you have πŸ™‚
